ATi 3D in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (driver free) 3D

  • If we have an ATi graphics
  • the best option to enable graphics acceleration is
free driver radeon / radeonhd
. The main advantage of this controller is that it still supports older models no longer supported by the proprietary driver. For testing
I used 10.04 Lucid Lynx Ubuntu Desktop 32bit on a laptop with ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955.

driver installation and activation of

This is the driver that is used by default after installation therefore generally will not need to install it, but if it has been cleared for any reason we can reinstall it and use it with the command: sudo aptitude reinstall xserver-xorg-video-radeon xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd & & sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Check results
The fastest way verify that the drivers are installed and in use is using the command:

  • ATi OpenGL

Lucid Lynx Ubuntu nvidia (driver free) 3D

already seen how to activate the 3D nouveau. The advantage of this driver is that being free we are not tied to the decisions of a company and its features best meet the needs of users. For testing 10.04 Lucid Lynx will use Ubuntu 64bit and nVidia GeForce 8600 GT. It is recommended that any graphics driver desinstaleis before installing another. Note: 3D support by the nouveau nvidia free driver is in development and is considered quite unstable. Apply explained in this article could destabilize your system, make a backup before you start.

For this article I will rely on the
Compiz + Nouveau in Lucid Lynx Beta2
  • with some modifications (I recommend that you read before continuing)

add repositories and install packages

Open application System - Administration - Software Sources and in the tab
  • Another add software repositories Edgers Xorg, which are lucid http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ubuntu
  • main deb-src deb
lucid http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ubuntu main

closed the application and reload the repositories to update the database. Now install the necessary software with the command:

sudo aptitude update & & sudo aptitude dist-upgrade & & sudo aptitude install linux-image-6.2.1934-2-generic linux-headers-02.06.1934 -2-generic ia32-libs-mesa-dri-gallium

After this reboot the system so that new drivers are loaded nouveau: sudo reboot
Check
results
The fastest way verify that the drivers are installed and in use is using the command: glxinfo Gnome Lucid Shell with nouveau

Ubuntu nvidia Lucid Lynx (owner driver) Four

Once installed Lucid Lynx one of the most common is to activate 3D functions, whether to use OpenGL games, to enable desktop effects or simply to optimize the performance of our graphics. In this article we will see how to get acceleration using the nvidia proprietary driver . Whose main advantage is a higher yield 3D and the biggest disadvantage is that it is free (and therefore at the mercy of the wishes of a company) For testing 10.04 Lucid Lynx will use Ubuntu 64bit and nVidia GeForce 8600 GT. It is recommended that any graphics driver desinstaleis before installing another.

Install the driver from the Appearance (Recommended)

This is the easiest method, automates the entire process and reduces the possibility that the user makes a mistake. It's as easy as going to menu System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects and select from the options
Normal or Extra
. In doing so we notice that the system will download and install the nvidia proprietary driver appropriate for your hardware:

  • System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects
Once completed, we prompted to reboot the system (to load the new drivers)

Install the driver from the package manager

If the above method does not work you can use the package manager to force driver installation with the command (substitute the driver version that fits the your graphics hardware): sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-185

and prepare the system for use with the command:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

finally reboot the system so that new drivers are loaded kernel and the graphical environment.
  • What driver version do I need? This depends on our nvidia chipset, the chipset we'll see with the command: $ lspci
  • GeForce5 Chipset nvidia-glx-96: Geforce2 chipset and nvidia-glx
Geforce4-71: Riva Chipset TNT/TNT2

Note: if you're not sure exactly needs your graphics driver can go to
http: / / www.nvidia.com/
and fill in the form of driver downloads. With that you should know that version and download that version using aptitude
.

Install the driver manually from nvidia's website (not recommended)
This method should be used only as a last resort, it is more difficult, requires more knowledge by the user and is difficult to maintain. To do a manual installation will go directly to the web http://www.nvidia.com
, fill in the fields of the form and give us the option to download the driver in *. run (self-installing script.)
Once downloaded and assuming that the file is called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run and I have it saved on the desktop we perform the following steps: 1. Exit to text mode by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1 and login with our user 2. Stop the GUI with the command sudo service gdm stop

3. Start the driver installation with the command sudo sh ~ / Escritorio/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run (substitute the path and file name for yours if needed) 4. Follow the instructions in the program 5. If all went well will reboot with the command sudo reboot

have any questions about this method leed
    README file
  • of nvidia's own website.
Check results
The fastest way to verify that the drivers are installed and in use is using the command:
glxinfo string: GeForce 8600 GT/PCI/SSE2 GL_NV_depth_buffer_float, GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_vertex_program3, GL_NVX_conditional_render, GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap
Once satisfied that everything works and you can run your favorite games with 3D support (either native or through wine
    )
  • stationery set
  • or access the advanced features
controller n
v IDIA-settings Properties
graphics driver (nvidia-settings)

Note: a consequence reluctance to use the proprietary nvidia driver is that the animation will start big and distorted, to fix this you can read Solution 2 for Plymouth properly with Nvidia or ATI drivers
