Customize the KDE desktop: Customize

One of the most important elements for managing the desktop is the panel. From there you access the menus of programs, documents and settings, switch between active applications and control notifications, among many other things.

KDE panel, default settings

In this article we will customize the appearance, behavior and functions of the KDE panel to adjust 100% to our needs.

Note: remember that graphic elements must be unlocked to make changes in the panel. Right click the desktop and choose Unlock graphics.

  • Change the position and size of the panel
Although this operation is the most basic is not as intuitive as it could be especially for those that you have not used KDE before .

We click the right mouse button on any empty area of \u200b\u200bthe panel and choose Panel Options - Preferences panel. panel appears an extension of the elements to perform these actions.

The elements we found are:
  1. Two arrows on the left (and two more at right) that control lan maximum and minimum width of the panel. In this way we can, for example, placing the maximum width of 100% and the minimum 80% give an aesthetic touch, making the panel does not occupy the entire width of the screen, but if the panel will expand to fill up to 100% of the screen, thereby making better use of space.
  2. An arrow in the center of the panel that will allow us to "decentralize" the hastadejarlo panel in the desired position.
  3. button edge of the screen allow us to drag the panel to any of the 4 sides of the screen.
  4. button Height we can change the thickness of the panel by dragging up or down.
  5. button More choices allow us to define define options for concealment, if the windows are covered or not the panel, rapid alignment ...
After a few minor tweaks this was the result:

custom KDE Panel

  • Add and remove items from the panel
KDE panel is, like everything that is displayed on the desktop, a plasmoid, but it is a very special plasmoid called "container" inside it can accommodate other plasmoids.

By default, the panel has many plasmoids to meet the needs of all users, that in my opinion takes away space in the panel and makes it more confusing. To remove any item we do not want you click the right mouse button over the item and choose Delete this item

Remove items from panel

This way we can eliminate all elements that we not use, leaving a panel "cleaner" and adjusted to our needs.

If instead you are someone who like to have the panel loaded with features, or need any of these functions are always visible can add any plasmoid to the panel (some will be better on the desk and others are designed specifically for the panel, but everyone can use.) To add a new panel plasmoid to do right-click on any free part of the panel and choose Add graphics

Add items to the panel

Thus we need to add any functionality to the panel, mail readers, process managers, editors of volumes. ..

After removing the elements that do not use and add that I found useful this was the result:

KDE panel, custom items

  • Change the subject
  • panel

Customize the KDE desktop: general options

Leveraging release of version 4.6 of KDE and seeing that there are not many guides on-line to personalize this fabulous desk I will dedicate a series of articles on customizing the look of KDE, focusing primarily on the desktop.

In this first article we als general customization options and what KDE offers tools to facilitate this process.

  • The wallpaper
The wallpaper or wallpaper is one of the factors that affect the general appearance of the desktop and in the time it takes our eyes tired of looking at the screen. To change the wallpaper is as simple as clicking the right mouse button on the desktop and select Desktop Settings .
Using the Get New Wallpapers button direct access to a fund set list sorted by date, popularity, etc (this very useful feature is available in all desktop items). We may also choose if you want a background color, an image or a sequence of images that will be happening in "slideshow."

  • The "theme" of desktop
All items displayed in the KDE desktop (panel, applets, or mini-applications plasmoids ...) can change shape rapidly to suit our tastes.

To change the desktop theme (or theme of plasma) will go to K - System settings - Workspace Appearance - Desktop Theme. In this window you can choose one of the themes already installed, install new themes to Get New Themes button or modify the properties the issue before us like Details tab.

K - System settings - Workspace Appearance - Desktop Theme

  • window decoration
The decoration is the type of border that have windows, this affects the overall appearance, position and types of buttons and the border thickness.

To change the window decoration go to System Settings - Appearance Workspace - Window decorations, where we can choose a decor that we like, modify the details of the decorations (the button position, thickness of the edge ...) or install new decorations from the button Get new decorations.

Here you can see the final result after changing the items shown in this article:
